Bark tanned by hand

From Ray:

For many of these skins, my hands have touched their every chapter, from our pastures to our little tannery.

The others were collected from my local abattoir, rescued from their projected destiny in a landfill.

Many farmers would like to see good use made of these skins but farming is more than a full time job, it's a lifestyle and the direct lines to tanneries were diminished significantly in the past 2-3 decades.

But a few of us artisanal tanneries are rebuilding the relationship, saving the craft and these skins through tanning and teaching.

Leather and wool are durable, temporature regulating, comfortable.

Did you know that sheep skins were used in medical beds for temperature regulation and to reduce pressure that cause bed sores?

My family uses these skins for my grandfather with Cerebral Palsy who's been bed ridden for 10 + years.

Our family and friends also use these skins for camping, long evening fires, seat covers (atvs, motorcycle, car), rugs, yoga mats and sit mats.

l've also had the pleasure to craft horse saddle pads for our local riders.

When lovingly cared for, these skins can last generations.

When their time is done, they bio degrade, returning well to soil.
