About the maker
A sheep rancher and hide tanner, Rachel has spent over a decade working in intimate relationship with the land, animals, and rhythms of the natural world.
For Rachel, hide tanning is an act of alchemy, a somatic art that exists in the liminal space between life, death, and rebirth, honouring what has passed while gently ushering forth what is becoming.
Rooted in reciprocity, her work is an invitation to remember that we are not separate from nature, but participants in its eternal cycles of life, death, and renewal.
Each sheepskin begins with relationships
Folk & Forage sources hides directly from small farms and local abattoirs, using what would otherwise be a waste product and supporting more responsible, whole-animal use.
Each hide is tanned using a traditional vegetable (bark) tanning process. This method uses natural tannins instead of chemicals and takes weeks to months, not days. It’s slower, more hands-on, and requires careful attention at every stage.
Each carries a story of pastures grazed, the people involved, and a craft near as old as human history.
Sourced exclusively from Ontario sheep, your purchase supports local farmers, waste reduction and the continuation of rare traditional craft.

IN LOVING MEMORY
For Sóley
Sóley Sarah Margaret Blinston
December 12, 1990 – June 12, 2026
A promise kept
Sóley understood the profound alchemy of working with the natural world. She recognized that transformation was not something we performed upon a material, but something that occurred within ourselves through the act of tending it.
Through the ancient practice of hide tanning, she found a way to transform her grief into praise, to honour life through death, and to discover beauty in what others might overlook.
For Sóley, this work was an invitation to slow down, to listen, and to participate in the sacred cycles of life, death, and renewal.
Before she passed, we had promised we’d each initiate tanneries of our own.
Folk and Forage is for her in honour of that promise.
Use my hands, little buttercup.
